Sorrow and Anger
Sorrow...the pictures from today's disaster are shocking, over 11,000 dead so far and the toll is only starting. I am praying for all my friends out there in SE Asia...I hope all of you and your loved ones are OK!
Angry... I turned on the television and flipped through 90 channels of US media. Not one mention of the 11,000 people dead. Not one. Do you remember Sept. 11th? Do you remember how coverage was on every channel and there was nothing else on? Why do the 2,572 innocent people who died in September 11th deserve something that the 11,000 innocent people who died today don't? We don't value people's lives equally. The media is making a bold statement that 2,572 Americans > 11,000 "other" people. When will our media finally realize that it is this exact arrogance and disregard for the value of "non-american" lives that fuels the kind of hatred behind attacks like those on September 11th?

You mean even CNN is not reporting it either? That would be really sad. Would be good people like you can bring their concerns to the mess media soon. God bless the earth!

CNN had some coverage of it later on. Actually, all of the news channels included something about the tragedy in the evening news. CNN also had it as the top headline on their website, along with the NY Times and the other major papers.
So, there was some coverage...but the difference is that on Sept. 11th everything else STOPPED. It wasn't just another news story. The message came out that "You need to stop watching the Simpsons because a bunch of innocent people just died." That is what was missing yesterday.

Well said Suzanne. The local news station I was watching here lead with the story for maybe 30 seconds.
I think they were making room for the 3 minute investigative report on how one can go about renting designer purses. Not kidding. Soma anyone?

It seems that media are kind of "lost" almost in every country. Here in Portugal they actually spent some time covering the tragedy but they focused 90% of the time on the portuguese that might have be vacationing in Phuket or something. It felt really strange almost as if "we dont care if everyone else is dead, as long as we know about the portuguese". Sad, really sad.
